When it comes to understanding how you should be prioritizing your browser search safely, there aren’t many people out there who have the same kind of experience as James Feldkamp. With many decades of cybersecurity experience, it should come of no surprise to find out that he had quite a few tips he was willing to share for people that need to practice safe searching on their browsers while quarantined during the COVID-19 pandemic.
1. Make Sure You Are Visiting Only Trusted Websites
When it comes to conducting browser searches safely, it is imperative that you “only visit websites that you know and trust.” James Feldkamp says. “There are plenty of websites that will try to trick you into sounding like they are trustworthy but sometimes these are the ones that can be the most malicious to oblivious users.” James Feldkamp explains. This is especially true in the social media and accounting spaces as cyberattacks through these websites have gone up by more than ten percent during the Coronavirus pandemic. “You need to be especially careful when you are visiting websites that might come off as legitimate but aren’t.” James Feldkamp continues. “Faux accounting websites are very good at this as they tend to put a plastic sheen on an otherwise scammy website.” This “plastic sheen” can include links that can severely compromise your system. “My company has had to deal with several of these sorts of error reports in the past and it is not something you want you or your family to get into.” James Feldkamp says when describing his experiences with some of these phony websites.
2. Don’t Readily Give Out Information
Unfortunately, because many people are on their computers, constantly looking at Coronavirus news, it has become easier for malicious scammers to take advantage of individuals who would otherwise not fall victim to these easy attacks. “Smishing and phishing is something that we look at carefully on an everyday basis. People are using these fake Coronavirus cures to scam people out of hundreds of thousands of dollars.” James Feldkamp says. Even though state governments have cracked down on this practice, There are still plenty of people who fall prey every single day. “It is important to educate our parents on the issues with readily giving out important information like addresses, emails, phone numbers, and social security numbers to potential scammers.” The attacks that James Feldkamp has fielded include smishing attacks where the scammer uses SMS messaging in order to scam the individual out of giving important pieces of information like credit card numbers. “It is a problem and we need to do something about it.” James Feldkamp says.
3. Understand Who Your Enemies Are
By defining who those individuals are, we can better educate our vulnerable populations from making bad decisions. “Our parents are the most well-meaning individuals in our lives but this can be a double-edged sword as it makes them vulnerable to digital snake oil salesmen who claim to have a cure for us but are only trying to wheedle out information.” James Feldkamp says. While the act itself might be morally bankrupt, there are individuals out there who are trying to make as much money as possible off of the fear. “I believe it is our responsibility to fight back and not fall victim to these individuals.” James Feldkamp concludes.
If you are concerned about vulnerable populations falling victim to scams, you can join James Feldkamp in your concern. While this is an issue that won’t go away any time soon, hopefully, these tips can serve to protect some individuals from facing financial troubles at the hands of scammers.
